Staying Healthy Working in the Yard
With spring in full bloom and summer right around the corner our yards and gardens will require more and more of our time. It is just as important to keep those healthy as it is to keep your body healthy. Yard work can put a tremendous amount of stress on the spine, shoulders, hands and knees. With these few simple tips we can have you working the day away!!
Make sure you always warm up before beginning any sort of exercise. While you may not think of gardening as a workout you are using repetitive motion which can lead to injury without the proper stretching. Make sure to spend 5-10 minutes stretching your shoulders, hamstrings and doing a few simple body squats. Also make sure to stretch your back by slowly rotating side to side.
Another helpful tip to prevent injury is to take breaks. It can be easy to lose track of time when you are so focused on the task at hand but this does nothing for your spinal health and pain levels. Try to make sure you are changing position or stopping repetitive motion every 15 minutes to give your body a break. During breaks be sure to drink plenty of water to keep your body healthy and hydrated.
The last thing you can do for your body is make sure you are getting routine adjustments. Chiropractic adjustments provide proper spinal joint motion that helps lead to increased flexibility, mobility, proper muscle activity and nervous system communication. It is very important to get adjusted before and after long stints of yard workto keep your body in optimal condition to enjoy the outdoors!!
