I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Sunscreen.
Summer is upon us and for a lot of us that means a lot more time spent in the sun. It’s extremely important to remember to use sunscreen every time you go out in the sun. This can prevent premature aging and/or skin cancer. Sunscreen can be your best friend, as long as you’re applying it correctly. Here are a few tips to ensure proper application:
- Make sure you are choosing sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher with broad spectrum coverage. This means is protects against UVA and UVB rays. You should also use a brand that is water resistant.
- Sunscreen takes about 15-20 minutes to fully absorb into the skin. If you wait until you are in the sun to apply your skin is unprotected and at a higher risk of get sun burned which can cause permanent damage to the skin. To protect your lips use a lip balm with an SPF of at least 15.
- Make sure you are using the appropriate amount. The average adult requires approximately 1 ounce to cover the entire body. Be sure to thoroughly rub in the sunscreen on all exposed skin. Be sure to pay attention to areas like the ears, tops of feet and your head. People who are balding or have thin hair may sun burn on their scalp.
To remain sunburn free, try to reapply sunscreen every two hours if possible. If you are working up a sweat or in an out of the water reapply more often. Also, be sure to check that expiration on the sunscreen bottle as expired product is not as effective. With summer a month away, we want you to have fun in the sun and live life to the fullest, but you should do what you can to play it safe using proper precautions and maintaining an awareness of the ways lifestyle may be affecting your health!!
